December 2002:
Charlie Rose interviewed Jonathan Franzen on his Show, but he
never mentioned the conflict of interest and improper funds
handling we exposed in his acceptance of an NEA Grant, and which
the Washington Post finally acknowledged. ULA members rallied and
wrote in to the CRS Forums protesting the neglect of this vital
topic. Several long-term contributors said ULA members should be
on the CR Show as reps of democratic publishing. The ULA was
commended for their innovative ideas and politeness. We
participated in other topics as well, bringing a much-needed
perspective and getting a good response.
